Manuka Honey

Mānuka honey MGO ratings explained

MGO (Methylgloxal) is the major antibacterial component of Mānuka honey. This naturally occurring active ingredient holds anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiseptic qualities. Scientists and researchers developed this ‘activity rating’ to define the strength of the healing qualities of Mānuka honey for medicinal and therapeutic use. The higher the rating given, the greater the honey’s health and healing benefits can be!

Since 2017 the New Zealand Government has put in place strict regulations around the production and labelling of New Zealand Mānuka Honey. All Mānuka honey for export must be tested by laboratories certified by the Ministry of Primary Industry to ensure it is authentic Mānuka Honey. These regulations were put in place to both protect the industry and its consumer and to guarantee your Mānuka honey is genuine.

Benefits and uses of Mānuka honey

Unlike all other honey, Mānuka honey produces a naturally occurring antibacterial component known as methylglyoxal (MGO). The higher the MGO rating of the Mānuka honey, the higher activity of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties present.

There are three compounds found exclusively in Mānuka honey which have been linked to health benefits: Leptosperin, DHA and Methylglyoxal (MGO) and HMF (Hydroxymethylfurfural).

General uses for Manuka honey include incorporating into breakfast meals, adding to warm and cool drinks, cooking and baking, skin care and eating straight off the spoon – our favourite!

Medicinal uses for Mānuka honey include antiviral and antibacterial treatments, gastrointestinal health, minor wound healing, immune strength and more!

The healing flower

Mānuka is a native New Zealand tree. Its official name is Leptospermum Scoparium. The most potent Mānuka honey comes from areas where Mānuka trees are abundant, usually in very remote and pristine areas of New Zealand. Most parts of the New Zealand Mānuka tree were used in traditional Māori medicine (Rongoā Māori) to treat wounds, burns, inflammation and digestive complaints.

Our Mānuka honey is created by the honeybees which harvest nectar exclusively from the Mānuka flowers.
